How to Choose Your Getting-Ready Airbnb for a Wedding in Slovenia

Most brides marrying in Slovenia get ready in an apartment near their venue. Here is what to look for before you book it.

Makeup by the window in soft daylight, the dining table used as the kit table

Most of my brides at Lake Bled, in Ljubljana or by the coast don't get ready at the venue. They rent an apartment or house nearby for the night before and the morning of the wedding. It is a lovely way to start the day, as long as the place works for hair, makeup and the photographer. These are the things I would check before you book.

1. A big window with soft daylight

This matters more than anything else. Makeup done facing a window looks natural in every photo, because daylight shows the skin as the camera sees it. Look at the listing photos: you want at least one large window in a room where a chair can stand facing it. North- or east-facing windows give the softest light in the morning; harsh direct sun can be softened with a sheer curtain.

2. A table and a free corner by that window

I need a table about the size of a dining table next to the window for my kit, and space for a tall chair. A kitchen counter far from the window doesn't work, because the light is wrong there. In this Bled apartment the dining table stood right by the windows, which made a perfect station.

3. Space for everyone who gets ready with you

Count everyone: you, your bridesmaids, mums, sometimes the groom, plus the photographer and videographer. One open living room with a separate bedroom for getting dressed is ideal. If the groom gets ready in the same place, a second room keeps the first look a surprise.

4. Power sockets and air conditioning

Hair tools need sockets close to the chair. In summer, air conditioning is not a luxury: a hot room makes everyone sweat before the day has started, and makeup sets better on cool skin.

5. A pretty spot for the dress and the first photos

Your photographer will look for a clean wall, a window or a staircase for getting-ready portraits and the dress. A bright, calm room gives you beautiful photos before you even leave.

6. Easy access and parking

I arrive early with a lot of equipment. Parking close to the entrance and no steep stairs make the morning calmer for everyone. Check with the host that early check-in or a late check-out is possible on the wedding day.

7. Close to the ceremony, with a buffer

Pick a place within 10 to 20 minutes of your ceremony, and always leave an extra hour for arriving, leaving and traffic. Around Lake Bled in summer, short drives can take much longer than the map says.

Questions

Can you come to my Airbnb or hotel for bridal makeup?+

Yes. I come to the place where you get ready, anywhere in Slovenia. Travel is charged separately, depending on the distance.

How much space do you need?+

A table next to a window and room for a tall chair. For a bigger bridal party, a second station by another window keeps the timeline relaxed.

What if the apartment has little natural light?+

I bring professional lights, so the makeup is always done in good light. Still, daylight gives the most natural photos, so a window is worth looking for.
